Teach the four operations of arithmetic for partial quantities using hands-on experiences.

Laying a foundation for conceptual understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages can set students up for success long into their academic studies. Teachers can lay the foundation for deep intuitive and conceptual understanding with the right materials, especially when these material representations are introduced early in a child's study of fractions, typically in grades 3-4. However, these materials can help students understand fractions at any age. The workshop will show teachers how to use manipulatives to guide students to discover for themselves the rules for finding equivalent fractions; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions; how to extend the decimal system to the right to include numbers less than a whole and do arithmetic with these; how to translate between fractional numbers, decimal numbers and percentages; and how to use percentages. This work can be used to enhance conceptual understanding alongside any curriculum being used.
